Solvent-Free Bulk Heterojunction (SF-BHJ) organic photovoltaics

We are developing a new process for making organic solar cells without using traditional organic solvents. The process promises to be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than traditional solar-cell production techniques. The process uses a reactive thiophene monomer or oligomerĀ in place of a more traditional solvent and an in-situ reaction is initiated by UV radiation.

Fundamental interface studies in organic photovoltaics

We study the influence of interface roughness in model polymer/polymer bilayers with on device operation. We show that non-equilibrium, sharp interfaces that cannot be achieved by thermodynamic processes are best for interfacial charge separation. (Collaboration with C. McNeill, Cambridge).
